FlashDev is a framework and body of knowledge with a focus on Agile Hardware development. The name is an acronym for: Framework for Lean-Agile Systems thinking Hardware Development. As the name implies, it is founded on values and principles from Lean, Agile, and Systems Thinking. It is also influenced by DevOps, complex adaptive systems thinking and other.

To be able to live up to today’s expectations and deal with the uncertainty related to the complex and ever changing environment, we need:

a rapid, responsive and responsible way of developing hardware as an integrated part of a high quality complex system solution, by people and for people.

FlashDev’s main purpose is to provide structure and guidance for those exploring and utilizing the path to agile hardware. As the field of agile hardware is still relatively new, FlashDev will continuously grow and improve (incrementally and iteratively). Nowadays, it’s hard to imagine hardware without software, and the best results come from an integrated approach. FlashDev is meant to provide help with the hardware aspects of integrated complex systems development, and is aimed to work seamlessly with known frameworks like Scrum, SAFe, Scrum@Scale, etc. I consider it a type of UV-light that reveals the specifics of hardware in the context of product development.

Why use a framework?

Well for one, you may consider it as training wheels when learning how to ride a bicycle. They provide you a head start and learn faster. It is what is known in martial arts as Shuhari.
As the Aikido master Endō Seishirōshihan stated: “It is known that, when we learn or train in something, we pass through the stages of shuha, and ri. These stages are explained as follows. In shu, we repeat the forms and discipline ourselves so that our bodies absorb the forms that our forebears created. We remain faithful to these forms with no deviation. Next, in the stage of ha, once we have disciplined ourselves to acquire the forms and movements, we make innovations. In this process the forms may be broken and discarded. Finally, in ri, we completely depart from the forms, open the door to creative technique, and arrive in a place where we act in accordance with what our heart/mind desires, unhindered while not overstepping laws.”
